$20 1864-S MS 62 Brother Jonathan PCGS

Mint luster is satiny golden sunset in appearance, offering excellent eye appeal. Typically, the intricate detail of Liberty and eagle's finer features lack sharp definition. It is unlikely that this issue exists any other way, and along with the '62-S is viewed as the most weakly struck Type I double eagle. For an MS62 certified coin, surface marks are minimal, and there are just a few faint hairlines on either side. It is a delightful example.This important double eagle is from the S.S. Brother Jonathan shipwreck treasure, and is so noted on the PCGS holder. The S.S. Brother Jonathan went down off the Northern California coast on July 30, 1865, after reportedly striking a rock a few miles off shore, while carrying a cargo of gold bound for Ft. Vancouver, Washington. Salvage operations began in 1993. Fewer than 100 examples of the '64-S double eagle are reported to be among the gold coins salvaged, with most of those being heavily scuffed.
