S$1 1850 MS 61 PCGS
Nice mint. Well struck. Pleasing surfaces. Attractively toned. Semi-Proof-like. There were 7,500 coins minted for this date. Like the 1851 and 1852 after it, the 1850 Silver Dollar was minted in limited numbers due to rising silver prices in the aftermath of James Marshall's discovery of gold in California. Consequently this date saw widespread hoarding and melting during the run up in silver prices that characterized the 1850s, thus this date is a scarce-to-rare coin at all levels of preservation. PCGS has certified 13 coins at this level with just 14 finer.
