Territorial Gold 1855 AU 50 PCGS Wass, Molitor & Co. $50
A stunning large coin of the American Territorial Gold series. Free of significant problems, this lightly circulated survivor is a noteworthy departure from the typically encountered coin, many of which are harshly cleaned, tooled or otherwise impaired. The surfaces reveal numerous small and even a few moderate-size abrasions, but these features should be expected for a large, weighty gold coin that circulated on the West Coast during the 1850s. Operated by Hungarian immigrants Count S.C. Wass and A.P. Molitor, this firm was one of the most proficient gold-smelting and assaying plants to operate during the early years of Gold Rush California. Wass and Molitor issued gold coins in four denominations, the largest of which was Fifty Dollars. PCGS has certified four coins at this level with a mere seven finer. This handsome Wass, Molitor & Co. $50 will serve as a highlight in any numismatic holding.
