There were 42, 738 coins minted for this date. Although several theories have been advanced to explain the identity of the model for Liberty on the obverse of the Draped Bust Dollar, numismatists generally credit Mint Director Henry William De Saussure with providing the impetus for this type. Gilbert Stuart created drawings of Liberty using, we believe, Mrs. William Bingham (nee Ann Willing) as his model. John Eckstein then translated the sketches into plaster models, the device punches being the work of Mint Engraver Robert Scot.
