25C Hawaii 1883 AU 58 NGC
Nearly mint. Well struck. Pleasing surfaces. Toned. This is one of the five official issues minted for the Kingdom of Hawaii. United States Mint Chief Engraver, Charles Barber, began preparing the master dies and hubs for the coinage in 1881. These dies would later be modified by Mint Director Horatio C. Burchard. The coins for circulation were minted in San Francisco between November 1883 to June 1884 (all were dated 1883).The coinage was not legal tender after 1900, when the islands became a United States territory. Original mintage was 500,000 pieces, but 257,400 were melted.
