Dec 20, 2009 | 1937 Roanoke PCGS 64 Nearly Gem. Well struck. Pleasing surfaces. Toned. There were 29, 030 coins minted for this date. It has been reported Raleigh himself never spelled his name with an 'i' as Raleigh; this though has been debunked by the University of North Carolina - keeper of the 'Raleigh Room'. Raleigh's name can be found spelled in over 70 different ways in contemporary documents including Raleigh and he signed his name variously. At the time the coin was being designed, Errol Flynn; the famous actor was portraying the Earl of Essex in a popular movie and it is thought that the designer of this coin, William Marks Simpson of Baltimore used the images of Flynn in the movie for the portrait of Sir Walter Raleigh on the coin as the bust design resembles the actor closely. | | |||||||||||
